Annual Events

August - Pi Alpha Alpha Welcoming Social

Pi Alpha Alpha members, alumni and faculty welcome new students to graduate school and to their programs.

December - Pi Alpha Alpha Holiday Social

This special event revolves around the invitation of a guest practitioner who presents on, and answers questions about, a topic related to public policy and administration. The atmosphere is informal, providing members, students and faculty the chance to get acquainted with one another, network, share stories and explore similar interests.

April - Pi Alpha Alpha Induction Ceremony

The University of Utah Pi Alpha Alpha Chapter sponsors an induction ceremony for new Pi Alpha Alpha members. This event is by invitation to new inductees and their guests, members and faculty. A respected leader in the field of public service provides a keynote address, and may also be inducted as an honorary member of the chapter at the conclusion of the ceremony. Student, alumni, and faculty members may be presented with awards and recognized for achievements. Students are inducted into Pi Alpha Alpha and asked to recite the Pi Alpha Alpha oath, but this is not required. The oath helps those attending the induction ceremony to understand and appreciate what membership in Pi Alpha Alpha means.

May - Pi Alpha Alpha Graduation Event

In conjunction with the College of Social and Behavioral Science, Pi Alpha Alpha has traditionally hosted a get together on the OSH plaza to celebrate graduation of MPA and MPP students.

In addition...

MPA Best Paper Award

The Dalmus Nelson Paper Award is available each year to current MPA students or recent graduates of the MPA program at The University of Utah. The award recognizes the importance of clear written communication by public administrators. Winning paper(s) receive cash award(s) and the First Place winner's name is engraved on a memorial plaque displayed in the CPPA office.

Pi Alpha Alpha Student Manuscript Award

Nationally, Pi Alpha Alpha sponsors the Pi Alpha Alpha Student Manuscript Award in Public Administration, an annual competition open to students attending a NASPAA member institution in public affairs and administration. Each year, at NASPAA's Annual Conference, two students are recognized and presented the award--one for the best Master's-level paper and one for best doctoral-candidate paper. Student entries are judged on the basis of relevance of the topic, appropriate use of methodology, quality of presentation, originality, innovativeness, clarity and academic quality. The two awards include a plaque and a check for $200.
