CONCENTRATION AREAS


The area of concentration builds special knowledge in a particular administrative skill, governmental program or policy area, or in a particular level of government. Fifteen (15) semester hours are required for an area of concentration. In addition, students' major research papers and internship should be in their areas of concentration. The areas of concentration are listed below, as our the mandatory courses for each concentration.

Criminal Justice

Includes policies and procedures, issues surrounding public corrections and other criminal justice programs and facilities and financing.

Education
Includes both K-12 and higher education management and policy. Mandatory course: Foundations of Educational Organizations, Policy and Leadership (ELP 6400, Summer).

Health Administration
Includes preparation in health administration for private, public and nonprofit health organizations.
Mandatory Course: Health Policy (PADMN 6321, Spring)

Local Government Administration
Includes city and county administration, along with finance, crisis communication and customer service.
Mandatory Course: Administration in Local Government (PADMN 6390, Fall or Summer)

Natural Resource Administration
Includes environmental and natural resource administration, resource use issues, government regulation, and recreation and leisure administration.
Mandatory Course: Environmental Policy (PADMN 6322, Fall)

Nonprofit Organizations
Includes scope, structure, roles in the economic system, and public service delivery systems, and selected management and public policy issues.
Mandatory Course: Nonprofit Sector and Orgs (PADMN 6550, Fall)

Policy Analysis
Includes public budgeting and financial administration, governmental accounting, program evaluation and productivity improvement, and policy analysis.
Mandatory Course: Public Policy Theory and Application (PADMN 6320, Fall)

Public Human Resource Management

Includes public human resource management, organizational behavior and human performance, and labor-management relations.
Mandatory Course: Program manager and student will choose

Open-Ended
You may develop an area not named above by combining courses from several areas or by forming a different area from various relevant courses taught at the University.
No mandatory course, but please consider Policy Analysis (PADMN 6965, Spring), Public Finance (PADMN 6965, rotates), Organization, Productivity & Change (PADMN 6340, rotates) or Management of Nonprofits (PADMN 6570, Spring).

Please Note
Courses in the areas of concentration may be drawn from various departments and colleges. Please send a copy of the syllabus to the program manager for approval. The program manager will determine if the course fits under one of the concentrations and has a tie to public administration
